Dr Karin Hellner

Dr Hellner is a gynaecologist with a special interest in colposcopy. She received her medical degree from the Humboldt-University of Berlin, in Germany, and split her specialist training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology between Berlin and Oxford. Dr Hellner spent a further four years as a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard Medical School/Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, USA, where she has been working on the molecular mechanisms of human papillomavirus (HPV) associated carcinogenesis and explored novel drug discovery strategies to treat cervical cancer.

In 2011, Dr Hellner joined the University of Oxford as a Clinical Lecturer and was appointed as Senior Fellow in Women’s Health at the Nuffield Department of Reproductive & Women’s Health in 2017. She works as honorary Consultant Gynaecologist at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and is the Clinical Lead for Colposcopy.

She has a strong clinical interest in HPV associated cervical disease and leads a research programme in the field of the molecular basis and clinical management of cervical abnormalities. Her recent work focusses on early phase clinical trials of novel immunotherapeutics to facilitate HPV clearance and prevent/revert cervical abnormalities.

In her spare time she volunteers for Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust Charity. She lives with her 2 children in London.
