COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE AT 132 HARLEY STREET
We have always believed in a synthesis of orthodox and certain aspect of complementary medicine. It is well known that orthodox medicine carries excellent results across a wide range of conditions. However, there are many patients who are still not rendered 100 per cent well and this is often where complementary therapies come into their own.
There has been much criticism in the press recently that complementary medicines lack an evidence base. There has also been criticism as to the method by which certain complementary medicines work. Our view at 132 Harley Street is that whilst we do not necessarily need to know how they work, we do need reasonable evidence that they do work. We believe we have this with respect to the therapies that we offer.
Since we opened nearly 5 years ago we have had just over 9000 people through our doors and of these more than 1000 have accessed complementary therapy. Our complementary therapists all work within the NHS as well as the private sector and encompass hypnotherapy, nutritional advice, reflexology and acupuncture. We believe that these treatments have greatly benefited our patients who have chosen to utilise this type of treatments.
We perceive that there is a gap between what orthodox medicine can achieve and a state of “well being” for some of our patients and we also believe that our complementary therapists give great assistance in bridging this gap.
